How to Make a Gift

The National Coast Guard Museum wouldn’t be a reality without the generosity of private donors, federal grants, and Connecticut state investments. This is your opportunity to be a catalyst for something exciting, educational, and inspiring.

Ways to Support the Museum

Many gift giving options are available, including checks, stocks/securities, wire transfers, IRA rollovers, and donor-advised funds. If you’re unsure of the best approach, our professional gift officers can work with you to find an option that best aligns with your level of support.

Below, we’ve provided some details about some specific gift-giving ideas. Please note that this information does not constitute financial advice, and we encourage you to contact your retirement advisor for specific instructions and donation forms.

For more information, please contact Catherine Janney at cjanney@coastguardmuseum.org or 860-443-4200.

Employer Matching Gifts

Double the impact of your donation with a matching gift. Search below to see if your company is eligible, and if so, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift.

Donor-Advised Funds

With a donor-advised fund (DAF)—which is like a charitable savings account—you have the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to the National Coast Guard Museum Association. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts.

If you already have a DAF, use this free and easy application to initiate a grant to the National Coast Guard Museum Association.

What is Donor Advised Fund?

What is a donor-advised fund? A donor-advised fund (DAF) provides donors with a centralized charitable giving vehicle. It allows philanthropically inclined individuals, families, and corporations to make an irrevocable charitable gift to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program and take an immediate tax deduction.

If you already have a DAF, use this free and easy application to initiate a grant to the National Coast Guard Museum Association.

Tax-Free Giving with an IRA

You can make an impact—and save on taxes by using your IRA to make a gift. If you’re 70½ or older, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity, such as the NCGMA, without paying income taxes on the money.

This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).

  • Beginning the year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).
  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you don’t itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level, which may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

Planned Giving

Your gift can be customized to meet your family’s future needs while also reducing state and federal income taxes. In a short as one sentence, you can make a gift in your will or trust that significantly impacts the Museum’s efforts. Your support helps ensure we can continue our mission—whether you give a set amount or a percentage of your estate.

Transfer of Stock Donations

Utilize appreciated assets instead of cash on hand and experience significant tax savings. To make this process as simple as possible, the Museum has invested in a partnership with FreeWill and this secure online tool that guides you through the process of donating stock in about 10 minutes. Contact Catherine Janney at cjanney@coastguardmuseum.org or  860-443-4200 for instructions on how to transfer stock and securities from your brokerage or investment account.

Key information you’ll need from us when working with your broker:

  • DTC Code: 0015
  • For Benefit of: National Coast Guard Museum Association, Inc.
  • Broker: Morgan Stanley
  • Account Number: 612047416

Kindly notify us when the transfer is executed, include the name of stock, the number of shares, and the expected date of transfer. We request this information because we often don’t receive the donor’s information from the broker and we have to try to determine the source of the gift, which can delay our acknowledgement of your gift.

Thank you for your Support!

It is with heartfelt appreciation to donors like you that we are able to build and support the National Coast Guard Museum!
